VPN is basically a private network that uses a public network (usually the Internet)
to connect remote sites or users together. Instead of using a dedicated, real-world
connection such as leased line, a VPN uses "virtual" connections routed through
the Internet from the company's private network to the remote site or employee.
With the rapid growth of Internet access and bandwidth availability across the
globe, the need for security has almost become inevitable. But now, with the
evolution of security through VPN's, this is possible and gives the capability to
connect the private offices and users to use any untrusted IP network for secure
interconnections through this "virtual" mode. This medium of communication also
worked out to be highly attractive as a replacement to the private leased circuits.
Using VPN, corporates will be able to leverage on an ISP's service, providing
cost-effective:
•
Office to office connectivity
•
Road warrior connectivity access
•
Extranets with service agents, partners, etc.
•
Secure connectivity from home to the office network.
