Installation, Configuration, and Usage
Considerations for FASTPXNS
Possible reasons for no response to FASTPXNS Ethernet requests include:
The Xerox controller is powered down.
The Xerox HIP task is not running.
An incorrect version of HIP is running. (The version must be 3.5 or later.)
The Xerox Ethernet address (PRINTERADDRESS) is incorrectly set in the
FASTCNFG file. (Contact your Xerox representative to confirm the Ethernet
address of your printer interface.)
If XNS routers are used between the host and Xerox printer, then the source and
destination XNS network numbers might be incorrect. These are specified as
SNETWORK and DNETWORK attributes for the DEVICE entry in the FASTCNFG
file. SNETWORK should specify the XNS network number to which the host is
connected. DNETWORK should specify the XNS network number to which the
Xerox printer is connected. Both must be specified in hexadecimal notation in the
FASTCNFG file.
If XNS routers are used between the host and Xerox printer, then the router
Ethernet address might be incorrect. This is specified as the ROUTER attribute for
the DEVICE entry in the FASTCNFG file. It is the Ethernet address of the router on
the source XNS network that is used to reach the destination XNS network. This
address is hard-wired into the router and changes if the router changes. It is
specified as a 48-bit hexadecimal address (12 characters) in the FASTCNFG file.
The Xerox controller is not properly connected to the LAN.
Either the Xerox controller and the TLAM IEEE 802.3/Ethernet controller are not
connected to the same LAN, and these LANs are not connected using a suitable
LAN bridge or router, or the Xerox controller and the PAM Ethernet 4 ServerNet
adapter (E4SA) are not connected to the same LAN, and these LANs are not
connected using a suitable LAN bridge or router.
The LAN is not operational. If FASTPXNS and the Xerox printer are the only users
of the LAN, then it is probably a good idea to verify that the LAN is working
correctly. Frequent causes of non-operational LAN segments are incorrect or
missing cable terminators (cable end open-circuit or short-circuit) and poorly
installed LAN transceivers (thick Ethernet cable). Ask your Xerox representative for
instructions on how to verify the Controller, Patch Panel interface, Drop Cable, LAN
Transceiver and LAN segment.

Post-Connection Problems

In some cases, problems occur after a connection is made. Sometimes these problems
reflect incorrect Xerox system setup. If the Xerox printer is placed offline with a Courier
reject message logged to EMS, the Xerox system needs to be examined for the
existence of the appropriate files for the Clearinghouse and set time functions. If you
encounter this type of problem, verify that the following three files are installed on the
Xerox system drive:
