Considerations for FASTPTCP
The FASTPTCP print process allows you to use the Spooler to print documents on
printers attached to HP NonStop systems through HP NonStop TCP/IP networks either
directly or through TELNET terminal servers. FASTPTCP supports printers attached in
the following ways:
TCP/IP direct-connected devices
TCP/IP direct-connected devices are IP-addressed servers or printers. For these
devices, FASTPTCP assumes no special protocol. For each job, FASTPTCP
makes a TCP/IP connection to the target, sends the data, and then closes the
connection.
TCP/IP to devices on terminal servers
These devices can be any serial printer or TTAP printer attached asynchronously
to a terminal server. Generally, a TELNET connection is preferred to a TCP/IP
direct connection.
TCP/IP-TELNET to serial printers on terminal servers
In general, any serial printer connected to a terminal server supporting the
TELNET server protocol can be driven by FASTPTCP. AWAN 3883, 3884, 3885,
and 3886 models support this protocol. Flow control is handled between the
terminal server and the printer, usually using hardware (CTS) or software
(XON/XOFF).
TCP/IP-TELNET to Supported TTAP printers
TTAP printers support a proprietary protocol that reports the printer status. Some
TTAP printers have TTAP support built into their serial interface; other printers
provide TTAP support by using a plug-in serial interface card. FASTPTCP requires
that TTAP printers be connected to a terminal server such as an AWAN server.
TCP/IP to HP JetDirect connected printers
HP JetDirect connected printers are printers attached to the network through the
HP JetDirect network card. For these printers, FASTPTCP uses a direct TCP/IP
connection to ensure efficient delivery of data and uses UDP datagrams to solicit
printer status from the SNMP agent running in the HP JetDirect card.
