Installation and Configuration Considerations for
FASTPX25
If, however, the same X25AM subdevice is being used for many printers, the Spooler
device name must include an additional qualifier (.xxx) to make it unique for each
printer. For example:
$X25A.#PRINT.A
$X25A.#PRINT.B
The additional qualifier is ignored by X25AM.
Note. Use this type of configuration with caution. If the same X25AM subdevice is shared
between more than one printer (to reduce the number of SVCs needed), only one printer can
be in use at any one time. If the Spooler has jobs to print on more than one printer, the first
printer enters the PRINT state and the others enter the DEV ERROR 12 state. The Spooler
supervisor retries FEINUSE errors periodically. Only when the first printer has completed its
queue of jobs, does the next printer start, and so on. Although these errors do not prevent jobs
from being printed, CPU costs increase because of failed opens; therefore, whenever possible,
you should configure a distinct pool of SVCs for each FASTPX25 print process
To avoid confusion in Spooler devices that will be configured to share one or more
SVCs, the Spooler device name should not be a real X25AM subdevice name. In this
case, the Spooler device name is virtual and is only linked to the X25AM subdevice
when FASTPX25 selects a subdevice (SVC) to use. The Spooler device name must,
however, be a valid Guardian device name. For example, for a pool of X25AM
subdevices consisting of $X25A.P1, $X25A.P2, and $X25B.P1 you might specify a
Spooler device name of $PRINT.

Device Attributes

Spooler device attributes specify printing options for devices (in this case, X.25
printers.) Device attribute information is specified with the Spoolcom DEV command.
For a complete listing of the Spooler device attributes supported by all the FASTP
network print processes, see
FASTP Network Printers,
Table 6-1
lists the Spooler device attributes that have special considerations for
FASTPX25 and describes their effect on X.25 printers.
