Installation and Configuration Considerations for
FASTPTCP
AWAN Servers and Other Terminal Servers and
TCP/IP Direct and TCP/IP-TELNET
Configuration Considerations
Terminal servers and network print servers support a wide range of devices using the
TCP/IP direct and TCP/IP-TELNET protocols. AWAN servers and other terminal
servers generally support from 4 to 64 asynchronous ports, allowing individual access
to each port through a dedicated TCP/IP port number. Generally, TCP/IP-TELNET is
the preferred protocol, but some terminal servers support the TCP/IP direct protocol
(also known as "raw TCP").
Although some terminal servers support parallel-port connections or other connections,
these servers are treated just like any other terminal server by FASTPTCP because
they use the same TCP/IP TELNET or TCP/IP direct protocols as the other terminal
servers.
Each terminal server port is individually configured for attributes such as baud rate,
character size, parity, and flow control. In addition, each TCP/IP port can require
configuration to enable FASTPTCP to start a connection to a specific asynchronous
port.
For AWAN terminal servers, the TCP/IP-TELNET protocol is used. For details about
TELNET LISTENER and asynchronous PORT configuration, refer to the AWAN
3883/4/5 Access Server Configuration and Management Manual or the AWAN 3886
Server Installation and Configuration Guide.
In general, TTAP printers are handled like other printers, but require the character size
to be 8 bits, even parity, and no flow control at the asynchronous port.
Note. This discussion excludes the protocols supported by HP JetDirect, Lexmark, Microplex,
and LPD print servers. For information about these protocols, refer to the following
