Installation and Configuration Considerations for
FASTPX25
Once a job has been printed, FASTPX25 continues to use the same SVC for future
jobs as long it remains free.
If a successful open cannot be achieved using any of the SVCs configured for a
Spooler device, FASTPX25 passes the problem back to the Spooler supervisor. If all
opens failed with errors other than FEINUSE (12), FASTPX25 reports the last open
error to the supervisor. If at least one SVC failed with FEINUSE (12), FASTPX25
reports FEINUSE (12) to the supervisor.
The Spooler supervisor retries the open error 12 after RETRY seconds have elapsed.
Other errors cause the Spooler supervisor to place the device offline. The failed open
is retried only if the operator restarts the device or if the Spooler device has been
configured with RESTART using the Spooler DEV command.
As an aid to debugging configurations, FASTPX25 can be instructed to display the
Spooler device-SVC relation whenever it prints a job. This feature is enabled by setting
the DEVICE PARM bit 2 (%20000) using the Spoolcom DEV command, which causes
a message containing this information to be written to $0 whenever a job is printed.
Finally, note that SVC sharing doesn't guarantee that jobs print in the order that they
were collected. If a queue of jobs for a particular destination starts to print, the SVC
does not become free until the queue is emptied. Jobs for other printers might have to
wait until this queue is cleared. If printers remain idle for significant periods of time
waiting for jobs that have already been collected, it indicates that the pool of SVCs is
not large enough to handle the concurrent printing requirement.
Installation and Configuration Task Overview
for FASTPX25
To install and configure a FASTPX25 print process, perform the following tasks:
1. Install the FASTPX25 object code ($SYSTEM.SYSTEM.FASTPX25) This step is
described in
2. Add the following configuration information to the Spooler subsystem either
interactively or in a command file:
a. Create one or more FASTPX25 print processes using the Spoolcom PRINT
command. Creation of a print process is described in step
Configuration Tasks
b. Associate each device name (that is, the device name designated for an X25
printer) with the appropriate FASTPX25 print process and specify the
appropriate Spooler device attributes for each device using the Spoolcom DEV
command.
