Installation and Configuration Considerations for
FASTPTCP
Optional DEVICE Attributes for Dumb Serial Printers
Connected Through AWAN Servers or Other TELNET
Terminal Servers
In addition, the DEVICE entry can contain any of the optional attributes for all TCP/IP
connected devices as described in
Devices
on page 3-18 and the following optional attributes:
SHUTDOWNTO=n
specifies the time (in 10-millisecond units) that FASTPTCP should wait for a
session shutdown to complete. Values can be up to 8640000 (24 hours); the
default value is 0.
When PROTOCOL=NONE, at the end of a print job FASTPTCP causes TCP/IP to
send a FIN packet to the remote device. The remote device is expected to respond
with a FIN within the SHUTDOWNTO interval for normal job completion. If FIN is
not received, the job is requeued to the Spooler. The value specified for
SHUTDOWNTO must be large enough to handle cases where the printer is out of
paper, offline, or otherwise backed up. Typical values are from 180000 (30
minutes) to 720000 (2 hours). Although the default value of 0 is compatible with
previous FASTPTCP product versions, change this value if any problems occur.
Note, SHUTDOWNTO only applies to the G06.10 and D48.02 RVUs and later, and
the value specified for SHUTDOWNTO should be equal to or greater than the
value for TIMEOUT.
SHUTDOWNTO is generally not used with AWAN servers because they use a
value of NOTIMINGMARK=NO, and NOTIMINGMARK=YES is recommended
when using SHUTDOWNT0.
SLOWPACE = slow-interval
specifies the time (in 10-millisecond units) that FASTPTCP should wait at job end
before reporting to the Spooler supervisor that the job is complete. Values can be
up to 12000 (2 minutes). The SLOWPACE specification is optional and can
adversely affect performance so use it with caution.
Normally, FASTPTCP spools jobs as rapidly as TCP/IP allows. The SLOWPACE
delay can be useful in network situations where slow printers that have small
buffers are not receiving all data before the network is reset at device close.
SLOWPACE can prevent jobs from being lost, while allowing devices to be set as
EXCLUSIVE OFF in Spoolcom.
The use of SLOWPACE is generally not recommended; its purpose has largely
been superseded by NOTIMINGMARK=NO for AWAN and by SHUTDOWNTO.
