Problem Diagnosis of the ETD Pump
This Chapter is a practical guide for the detection and correction of problems that may cause malfunction of the ETD
Pump.
A malfunctioning symptom of the pump can be caused by various reasons. Each reason requires one or more
inspections to identify the reason for the malfunction. Upon inspection when the source of the problem has been
confirmed, the solution is provided on the following table.
There can be more than one reason for a problem. Once the reason for the malfunction is diagnosed, the solution is
noted for the malfunction.

Symptom
1. The High pressure of the
ETD is far below the normal
condition, the ETD does not
increase the pressure from the
Feed Pump and the ETD is new
with only a few hours of
operation.

Check/Inspect
Ensure that the Feed Pump
is delivering the proper
volume flow to the ETD.

Verify that the sliding
distributor panels can move.
Inspect the ETD for
imperfections in the interior
chambers of the distribution
body, and verify that the
orifice (Item #47) is not
plugged.

Verify that the movement of
the pistons of the distributor
(Item #12) is slow and
incomplete.

Solution
1. The sliding panel seats of the
distributor (Item #10), needs to be
resurfaced as detailed in Repair #1
page 13 of this section.
2. The Sliding Control Panel of (Item
#9) is worn/damaged, and needs to be
resurfaced or replaced, as detailed in
Repair #2 page 16 of this section.

The seals of the ETD are damaged and
need to be changed and or replaced,
proceed as detailed in Repair #4 on
page 20 of this section.

Clean the orifice (Item #47) of the
ETD, as explained in Repair #3 page
19 of this section.
1. To clean the rubbing surface of the
distribution plate (Item #2) with the
Sliding Distributor Panels of (Item
#10), as detailed in Repair #1 on page
13 of this section.
2. The seats of the Sliding Distributor
Panels of (Item #10), need to be
resurfaced as detailed in Repair #1 on
page 13 of this section.
