DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
This protocol permits automatic configuration of the network for a com-
puter, and also assigns addresses or sets parameters centrally. The DHCP
server uses a fixed IP address pool for automatically assigning random, tem-
porary IP addresses to networked computers (Clients) or cou-
plers/controllers, thus saving considerable configuration work in large net-
works. The client also obtains other information, such as the gateway ad-
dress (router) and the IP address of the Domain Name System (DNS).
DNS (Domain Name System)
The Domain Name System is a distributed, decentralized database that man-
ages the name sector in the Internet. Unique domain names (such as
http://www.wago.de) are transformed into IP addresses (such as
123.45.67.123) using a "forward lookup." IP addresses can be converted
back to domain names using a "reverse lookup." Using the naming service
several IP address can be used for one domain name for distribution of net-
work load. Besides this, domain names are easier to remember than IP ad-
dresses. If an IP address changes in the background, this does not affect the
domain name. Paul Mockapetris developed the DNS in 1983. Since then it
has been expanded to include other standards and has become anchored in
the RFC 1034 and RFC.
Driver
Software code, which communicates with a hardware device. This commu-
nication is normally performed by internal device registers.
