H.323 Endpoint Registration
For H.323 endpoints to receive calls they must register with a Gatekeeper. The process of
registering to a Gatekeeper varies depending on the endpoint type.
The RADVision H.323 Gatekeeper supports two types of registration from endpoints:
dynamic and static. The type of registration depends on whether the endpoint supports the
RAS (Registration Admission Status) protocol.
Endpoints that support the RAS protocol register dynamically with the Gatekeeper.
Endpoints that do not support the RAS protocol cannot register dynamically with the
Gatekeeper and need to be predefined in order to receive calls
You can use the configuration software to predefine properties for an endpoint with the
Gatekeeper. These properties are permanently stored in the Gatekeeper. Predefining
endpoint properties allows you to:
!" Register endpoints that do not support the RAS protocol and cannot dynamically
register with the Gatekeeper.
!" Define additional properties for endpoints that support the RAS protocol and can
dynamically register with the Gatekeeper.
By predefining endpoints you can distinguish between endpoints; for example, allowing
predefined endpoints to use certain services while other endpoints would not be able to use
them.
RAS Supporting Endpoint Registration
When you activate an H.323 endpoint that supports the RAS protocol it registers with the
Gatekeeper and goes online. The Gatekeeper now knows that the endpoint is online and
ready to make and receive calls. If you have predefined properties for this endpoint with the
Gatekeeper prior to this session, registration also adds endpoint information such as aliases
to the predefined properties. When the endpoint unregisters, the online properties no longer
exist, but the predefined properties are permanently stored in the Gatekeeper. If you have
not predefined properties for an endpoint, no information is stored in the Gatekeeper when
the endpoint unregisters.
Gateway Registration
The L2W-323 Gateway supports the RAS protocol and can dynamically register with the
Gatekeeper. It is recommended not to predefine properties for the L2W-323 Gateway as this
may prevent the Gateway from functioning properly.

Endpoints that do not support the RAS protocol can make calls even if they are not predefined.
