Glossary
BRI
Basic Rate Interface to an ISDN network. A BRI line has two 64 Kbps B channels that
transmit the data and one 16 Kbps D channel that is used for call setup and control
signaling.
broadcast
In packet-switched networks, the data is sent to all users connected to the network or
network segment.
channel bonding
Increasing the bandwidth of a call by aggregating two or more channels of an ISDN line.
circuit-switched
The temporary connection of two or more communications channels. Users have full use of
the circuit until the connection is terminated. ISDN is a circuit-switched network.
console port
The serial port on the Gateway that connects to a terminal or to a modem. This port is used
for local monitoring, diagnostics and remote configuration.
D channel
The signaling channel of an ISDN line. Used to carry call control messages between the
ISDN terminal and the public switch.
default extension
Any endpoint on the network that has been defined as an alternative destination on the
network for incoming calls routed by the Gateway.
DCE
Data Communications Equipment is the unit that sends the clock to all units that are defined
as DTE (Data Terminal Equipment). The Gateway can be defined as DCE, though usually,
it is set to DTE.
DID
Direct Inward Dialing is a method in which incoming calls are routed directly to endpoints
on the LAN, without operator intervention.
DTE
Data Terminal Equipment is the terminal unit or the unit that receives the clock from the
unit that is defined as DCE (Data Communications Equipment). Usually, the Gateway is set
to DTE.
