12 PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE CHECKS AND SERVICES
(PMCS)

12.1 Introduction

PMCS are the checks, services and maintenance performed to maintain the Modem in
optimal safe and operational condition. Performing a PMCS check every time the
equipment is used will contribute to high level of serviceability and operational
availability. Preventive maintenance generally includes cleaning, inspecting, servicing
and adjusting. These services are generally done on the following schedule:
Before-operations Service: Checks and services performed at the start of daily
operations or before a mission. This ensures the equipment is operational, safe,
and no damage has occurred since the last service or use.
During-operations Service: Checks and services performed during system
operations. Observe all LEDs and indicators and listen for unusual noises. Upon
return, report faults that could not be corrected to your supervisor. If continued
operation will damage the equipment or cause personal injury, the system should
be shut off.
After-operations Service: Checks and services performed at the close of daily
operation or mission completion. Clean and service equipment as needed and
report to your supervisor any faults that could not be corrected.
Scheduled services: Checks and services performed on a schedule.
PMCS checks are used to find, correct or report problems. PMCS should be performed
every day the system is operated. No replacement parts are required to perform PMCS
on this system.
Pay attention to WARNING and CAUTION statements. A WARNING indicates potential
personal injury. A CAUTION indicates potential damage to equipment.
Opening the Modem and performing maintenance is not addressed
in this manual. Attempting PMCS on internal hardware will
automatically void any commercial warranty.

equipment, review the following items:
a. System components:
condition. Are they correctly assembled, stored, secured, excessively worn or
corroded?
b. Bolts, clamps, nuts and screws: Continuously check chassis for looseness.
Tighten when loose. Look for chipped paint, bare metal, rust or corrosion around
