Crankshaft Main Bearing Replacement
Main Bearing Clearance Inspection
1. To check main bea ring-to-jou rna I oil clearance.
remove the lower block and bearing halves (see
page 1 -12)..
2 , C l e a n e a c h m a i n j o u r n a l a n d b e a r i n g h a l f w i t h a
clean shop towel.
3. Place one strip of plastigage across each main
l o u r n a l .
4 . R e i n s t a l l t h e b e a r i n g s a n d l o w e r b l o c k , t h e n t o r q u e
the bolts to 29 N.m {3.0 kgf.m,22 lbf.ft) + 56'.
NOTE: Do not rotate the crankshaft during
Inspeclton.
5 . R e m o v e t h e l o w e r b l o c k a n d b e a r i n g s a g a i n , a n d
measure the widest part of the plastigage.

6. lf the plastigage measures too wide or too narrow,
remove the crankshaft. and remove the upper half
ofthe bearing. Install a new, complete bearing with
the same color code{s), and recheck the clearance.
Do not file, shim, or scrape the bearings or the caps
to adjust clearance.
7. lf the plastigage shows the clearance is still
incorrect, try the next larger or smaller bearing (the
color listed above or below that one), and check
again. lf the proper clearance cannot be obtained
b y u s i n g t h e a p p r o p r i a t e l a r g e r o r s m a l l e r b e a r i n g s ,
replace the crankshaft and start over.
