72 Chapter 5: Matrox 4Sight-II hardware reference
Mass storage
Hard disk drive
To store data, the Matrox 4Sight-II integrated unit features a 6.4 Gbyte, 2.5 inch
hard disk drive. It has a 44-pin connector that connects to the ATA-44 connector
on the motherboard, via a flat-ribbon cable. The hard drive, manufactured by
Fujitsu Limited, supports the ATA/ATAPI-4 device specification, whose features
include the following:
• Support for two hard disks on a single channel. Support for programmed I/O
(PIO) modes 0,1,2,3, and 4.
• Support for Direct Memory Access (DMA) modes 0,1, and 2.
• Support for Ultra DMA modes 0,1, and 2.
• Cyclical Redundancy Checking (CRC).
• Logical Block Addressing (LBA).
The hard drive is resistant to small and medium shocks or vibration, but can be
permanently damaged if subjected to excessive forces.
Flash disk
You can purchase a flash disk to function as your IDE storage device. Flash disks
store data on a non-volatile memory chip, allowing it to hold content without
power. It is ideal when developing applications that have very low storage
requirements. It is more rugged, and uses less power than a rotating disk drive.
The 2.5 inch, 64 Mbyte flash disk provided by Matrox is manufactured by SanDisk
Corporation. It is designed to act as a typical IDE device (hard disk drive), in that
it uses the IDE interface, and connects to the internal ATA-44 connector using
the same ribbon cable as a 2.5 inch hard drive. Yet, the flash disk makes use of
flash memory technology.
The optional flash disk on Matrox 4Sight-II supports the ATA/ATAPI-4 device
specification.
