5. Install new hub cap-to-hub gasket, position hub cap to
hub and install attaching bolts—torque bolts to 14 ft.
lbs.

17,000 LB. AXLE

1. Remove the axle shaft flange-to-hub retaining nuts.
(Refer to Figure 57.)
2. Strike the center of shaft flange with a lead hammer

to loosen flange and dowels.
3. Remove tapered dowels from studs and pull axle
shaft from housing. In some instances it may be
necessary to spread dowels to permit removal.
4. Thoroughly clean old gasket material from wheel hub
and axle shaft flange, and install a new gasket over
hub studs and against hub.
5. Install axle shaft so that splines are aligned with dif-
