NOTE
2:
Lubricate with Multi-Purpose gear
lubricant meeting requirements of U.S. Ord
nance Spec. M IL-L-2105B.
The following table shows the proper viscosity "Multi-
Purpose" gear lubricant to be used during vehicle opera
tion.

FOUR WHEEL DRIVE
Most lubrication recommendations and procedures for
4 wheel drive equipped trucks remain the same as for
corresponding components of conventional drive trucks.
Only the front axle, including the differential and Cardon
joint, the transfer case, which permits power from the
transmission to either front or rear axles, and associated
linkage points and air vents require special procedures.
Front Axle
The front axle should be checked every 6,000 miles
and refilled with lubricant specified in Note 2 when nec
essary. With the differential at operating temperature,
fill to the level of filler plug hole. If differential is cold,
fill to the level of
/
" below the filler plug hole.

Cardon Joint
After every 6,000 miles of driving, remove the slotted
pipe plugs from the ball ends of the axle housing. Check
lubricant and refill with lubricant specified in Note 2
(1/2 pt. per joint) if necessary. Replace the pipe plugs
securely.
Air Vent and Hose
Check vent hose for kinks and proper installation every
miles.

Transfer Case
Check the transfer case level every 6,000 miles and,
if necessary, add lubricant to bring to the level of the
filler plug hole. Use lubricant specified in Note 2.
Control Lever and Linkage
Since no grease fitting is provided in the control lever
it is necessary to brush or spray engine oil on the lever
pivot point and on all exposed control linkage every
miles.

WHEEL BEARINGS
Front—All Trucks
Due to the weight of the tire and wheel assembly it is
recommended that they be removed from hub before
lubricating bearings to prevent damage to oil seal. Then
remove the front wheel hub to lubricate the bearings.
SAE 80
SAE 90
SAE 140
The bearings should be thoroughly cleaned before re
packing with lubricant.
The front wheels are equipped with tapered roller
bearings on all trucks except P -20, P-30 that are
equipped with ball bearings. Lubricate every 30,000
miles with high melting point wheel bearing lubricant.
Do not mix wheel bearing lubricants.
CAUTION:
" Long fibre" or "Viscous" type of
lubricants should not be used on bearings front
wheel.
REAR AXLES
Check lubricant level (including the interaxle differ
ential) every 6,000 miles. When necessary, refill to level
of filler plug hole using Multi-Purpose Lubricant speci
fied in Note 2.
Drain the lubricant every 24,000 miles. If the vehicle
is operated in exceptionally heavy work or at continuous
high speeds, the lubricant should be changed every
miles. It may be necessary to change lubricant more
often if vehicle is used off road in dusty areas.
NOTE:
The electric or air-torsion spring shift
units should be filled to the level of the filler
plug hole with SAE 10 engine oil every 12,000
miles or three months whichever comes first.
In Positraction axles use special Positraction
Rear Axle Lubricant.
On MA50 trailing axle, check lubricant level of each
wheel hub every 6,000 miles. When necessary, refill
hub to oil level mark with lubricant specified in Note 2.
MASTER CYLINDER
Check master cylinder fluid level every 6,000 miles.
If the fluid is low in the reservoir, it should be filled to
a point about 1/4" from the top rear of each reservoir
with GM Supreme No. 11 Hydraulic Brake Fluid or
equivalent.
FULL AIR BRAKES
Compressor
Every 6,000 miles - Remove compressor air strainer
and inspect or replace every 6,000 miles or oftener. The
element can be cleaned in kerosene or mineral spirits.
Cleaners of the aromatic compound must not be used.
The element should be squeezed (not wrung) dry after
cleaning.
Camshaft Bracket Bushings
Lubricate monthly or every 6,000 miles with chassis
lube. Avoid over lubrication because excess grease will
ruin brake linings.
HYDROVAC AND AIR OVER
HYDRAULIC BRAKES
The air over hydraulic (Air-Pak) piston type assem
blies are equipped with lubrication plugs in the closed
end of the shell approximately
