Drive Clutch Spring Inspection
CAUTION
Never shim a drive clutch spring to increase its
compression rate. This may result in complete stacking
of the coils and subsequent clutch cover failure.
The drive clutch spring is one of the most critical
components of the PVT system. It is also one of the
easiest to service. Due to the severe relaxation the
spring is subject to during operation, it should always
be inspected for tolerance limits during any clutch
operation diagnosis or repair.
Check to see that spring coils are parallel to one
another using a straight-edge. Distortion of the spring
indicates stress fatigue, requiring replacement.

BEARING INSPECTION

Needle Bearing Inspection (non-EBS clutch)
1. Rotate the clutch bearing in both clockwise and
counter-clockwise directions. The non-braking needle
bearing should rotate in both directions on the shaft
with only a slight amount of drag.
2. Verify there is no binding or rough spots. If problems
are noted continue with disassembly.
One Way Bearing Inspection (EBS clutch)
1. Rotate the clutch bearing in both clockwise and
counter-clockwise directions. The one way bearing
should rotate smoothly in one direction and lock up in
the opposite direction.
2. Verify there is no binding or rough spots when
rotating the bearing in the unlocked direction. If
problems are noted continue with disassembly.
NOTE
Excessive drag in the bearing may cause difficult
shifting or vehicle creep at idle.
