Troubleshooting

Problem: Battery does not charge
Condition
1. Battery wires/connections shorted — loose — open
2. Alternator belt loose — bad
3. Alternator/regulator failed
4. Stator/regulator/rectifier failed
Problem: Charging unstable
Condition
1. Battery wires/connections shorted — loose — open
2. Alternator belt loose
3. Alternator/regulator failing
4. Stator/regulator/rectifier failing
Problem: Starter does not engage
Condition
1. Battery charge low
2. Switch contacts defective
3. Start relay defective
4. Starter relay defective
5. Wiring connections loose — disconnected
6. Key switch defective
Problem: Battery discharges too rapidly
Condition
1. Battery sulfided
2. Electrical system excessively loaded
3. Battery short-circuited
4. Charging system not charging
Problem: Battery polarity reversed
Condition
1. Battery incorrectly connected

Remedy
1. Repair — replace — tighten battery wires/connections
2. Tighten — replace belt
3. Replace alternator assembly
4. Replace stator — regulator/rectifier
Remedy
1. Repair — replace — tighten battery wires/connections
2. Tighten — replace belt
3. Replace alternator assembly
4. Replace stator — regulator/rectifier
Remedy
1. Recharge — replace battery
2. Replace switch
3. Replace start relay
4. Replace starter relay
5. Connect — tighten — repair connections
6. Replace key switch
Remedy
1. Replace battery
2. Reduce load
3. Replace battery
4. Replace alternator — stator — regulator/rectifier — tighten
alternator belt
Remedy
1. Reverse connections — replace battery — repair damage
