6.3. Using a multimeter set to 200 ohms, place the black (–) probe of the multimeter on the relay termi-
nal marked COM (common). Place the red (+) probe on the relay terminal marked NO (normally
open). The multimeter should indicate no continuity. If the multimeter indicates continuity, the relay
has failed closed.
6.4. If the relay has failed closed, replace the relay. See Brake Light Relay Removal, Section 12,
Page 12-33.
7. Bypass the brake light relay.
7.1. Disable the vehicle before proceeding with step 7.
7.1.1. Place the Forward/Reverse handle in the NEUTRAL position, and chock the wheels.
7.1.2. Disconnect the battery cables as instructed. See WARNING "To avoid unintentionally
starting..." in General Warning, Section 10, Page 10-1.
7.1.3. Remove the center dash assembly. See step 2 of Key Switch Removal, Section 12,
Page 12-13.
7.2. Locate the red jumper wire (12) in the area behind the center dash panel (Figure 11-47,
Page 11-44).
7.3. Disconnect the red jumper wire (12) from the black wire (15).
7.4. Disconnect the brown wire (16) from the brown wire (13).
7.5. Bypass the relay by connecting the red jumper wire (12) to the brown wire (13) as shown
(Figure 11-47, Page 11-44).

8. Connect the battery cables, positive (+) cable first, and tighten hardware to 12 ft-lb (16 N·m).
9. With the relay bypassed, inspect the brake lights for proper operation.
NOTE: The aid of an assistant will be required to inspect the brake light relay for proper operation.
9.1. With the key switch in the OFF position and the key removed, press the brake pedal while an assis-
tant observes the brake lights. The brake lights should illuminate, regardless of the key switch posi-
tion (ON or OFF).
