The ion optics are supported by a pneumatic suspension bench to isolate the
analyzer from floor vibrations and maximize the instrument's performance.
Plug-in ion sources provide fast, simple source changeover between electron
ionization (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) modes without having to vent the
source housing.

Sample inlet

There are two main methods of introducing a sample into the instrument:
Through a gas chromatography (GC) oven (GC sample introduction).
Using a probe (probe sample introduction).
Both techniques can be used on most standard sources (for example, EI and
CI), although a number of ion sources are for GC use only. There are also
other ionization techniques that require their own specialist sample
introduction methods.

GC sample introduction

GC sample introduction is the most common method. The GC injections can be
automated by using an autosampler, allowing long batch analyses to be
performed unattended, often overnight or during a weekend. The MassLynx
