Table 7–1 (Cont.) Preliminary Troubleshooting of System Problems
Symptom
System does not boot at
startup.

Possible Cause
Software is not installed.
Default recovery action is set
to halt.
Incorrect boot device was
specified.
Boot device is not properly
configured.
Software problem.
Corrective Action
If a ?? appears next to NI, the
Ethernet cable may be loose.
If a ?? appears next to SCC, then
the keyboard and mouse cables
may be loose in the keyboard/
mouse connector block, or the
keyboard/mouse connector block
cable connector may not be firmly
attached to the system unit.
Install the system software. Refer
to the software documentation for
installation instructions.
Refer to Chapter 4 to change the
default recovery action to boot the
system from the system disk.
Change the default boot device
(bootdef_dev) parameter, explained
in Chapter 4.
show device
Enter a
command as
Chapter 4 describes and check to
see that all devices are configured
properly. If not, check the SCSI
IDs and the SCSI cables. Refer to
Chapter 2.
Refer to your operating system
documentation. Call your Digital
service representative.
