Configuring the BFD Protocol (NSM Procedure)

The Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) protocol is used to detect the failures in
a network. The BFD protocol is independent of the underlying transport mechanisms and
layers; hence the failure detection timers for BFD have shorter time limits than the failure
detection mechanisms of other protocols like OSPF and IS-IS. Each session of the BFD
operates in two modes, asynchronous mode and demand mode. In asynchronous mode,
both endpoints periodically send Hello packets to each other. If a number of those packets
are not received, the session is considered down. In demand mode, no Hello packets are
exchanged after the session is established; it is assumed that the endpoints have another
way to verify connectivity to each other.
