106 Appendix C: BIOS reference for Matrox Supersight SHB-5520

Overview

BIOS stands for basic input/output system. It acts as an interface between the
operating system and the Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board. When the Matrox
Supersight unit is turned on, the BIOS boots up the SHB and loads the operating
system. The BIOS is stored in flash memory on the SHB.
The capabilities of the BIOS flash memory chip are similar to that of
electrically-erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM), in that it can
be erased and re-written, as well as hold its content without power. This 4-Mbyte
flash memory chip is limited to 10, 000 write cycles.
The BIOS setup utility allows you to change various computer BIOS settings. You
can access the BIOS setup utility soon after you turn on the unit
the BIOS settings, you must save them and then reboot the unit before they will
take effect.
This appendix shows you how to access and change the BIOS settings using the
BIOS setup utility. It also explains the BIOS messages displayed during the course
of the unit's operation.
❖ Note that the Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board uses a BIOS written by
American Megatrends Inc. (AMIBIOS). Some of the menu items are not
applicable to the supported operating systems of the Matrox Supersight unit.

One SHB at a time

You can only adjust the settings of one Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board at a
time with the BIOS Setup utility. To adjust the settings of more than one SHB,
you will need to have a separate keyboard, display device, and mouse attached to
each SHB. Alternatively, you can use a KVM switch. A KVM switch allows you
to control more than one SHB with only one keyboard, display device, and mouse.
*. Note that most of the settings of the BIOS Setup utility have been optimally config-
ured to the specifications of Matrox Supersight. However, you might need to change
certain settings if you make additions to the unit.
