Backplane As a switched fabric backplane, the Matrox Supersight unit uses a series of PCIe Switched fabric backplanes switches to control the connections between your PCIe boards and the Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board(s). A switched fabric backplane allows traffic from one PCIe connector to pass through to the next available PCIe switch without being bottlenecked, while providing maximum bandwidth to the SHB.
SHBs SHBs The Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board is a PICMG 1.3 board that intergrates the following functionality: • Processing. Processing comes from either one or two multi-core Intel Xeon processors. There are two types of processors available: - Intel Xeon Quad-Core E5620 2.4 GHz processor.
Page 16
Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board. The installation of a Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board can block some PCIe connectors on the backplane, as each Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board takes up to two slots, and partially blocks a third slot. This partially blocked third slot can still be used, but only by short (1/2 length) PCIe boards or auxiliary I/O adapter brackets.

PCI 2.0 connection, Matrox Supersight Solo (13-connector version) supports both connections 2. The number of CPUs (1 or 2), number of cores (4 or 6), and amount of memory are configurable. Contact your Matrox ales representative for more information.
If you downgrade to Microsoft Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems, you will need to install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) to take advantage of all the features available in the Matrox Supersight unit and the Matrox Imaging Library (MIL).

Accessing your Matrox Supersight Accessing your Matrox Supersight The following is a list of ways to access your Matrox Supersight SHB-5520: • Use a keyboard, mouse, and display device. To interact with one SHB, connect your keyboard to one USB port, and your mouse to the other. Connect your display device to the analog video output connector.
SHBs in the chassis. Powering your Matrox Supersight The power supply for your Matrox Supersight consists of 4 banks of power supply modules (PSU), so Matrox Supersight has 4 power input connectors at the back of the unit. You must connect power to each of these, regardless of the number of SHBs or PCIe boards in your unit.

(ACPI) technology and Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology (EIST). Combined, these two technologies assist with power management and temperature control. To configure ACPI and EIST for the Matrox Supersight unit, refer to Appendix C: BIOS reference for Matrox Supersight SHB-5520. ACPI technology Matrox Supersight is compliant with advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI) technology.
The Intel processors use Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology (EIST) to enable very high performance while also meeting the power-conservation needs of the Matrox Supersight unit. The operating system dynamically adjusts processor voltage and core frequency (CPU speed) based on the CPU’s demand for processing power.

70 Appendix A: Hardware glossary Glossary • Asynchronous communication Asynchronous communication is transmission of data without the use of a synchronization clock. All timing required to recover the data from the receiver is encoded within the transmission. • Bandwidth A term describing the capacity to transfer data. Greater bandwidth is needed to sustain a higher transfer rate.
Page 71
Glossary • Cache A memory area of the processor. The processor can access data from its cache faster than it can access data from system RAM or mass storage devices. Many processors have a primary cache and a secondary cache. When searching for information, the processor first refers to the primary cache.
