PGM-FI System
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (cont'd)

Problem verifiCiltion:
1. Test-drive the vehicle.
2. Check the vehicle speed with
the scan too l.

Is the correct speed indicated?
I
NO
Check for en open in the ECMI
PCM:
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2.
Block the rear wheels and set
the parking brake.
3. Jack up the front of the vehicle
and support it with safety
stands.
4. Tum the ignition switch ON
(II).
5. Block the right front wheel and
slowly rotate the left front
wheel.
6. Measure voltage between
ECM/PCM co nnector termi -
nals 820 and C23.

Does the voltage pulse between
o V and 5 V or battery voltage?
I
NO
Check for a short in the ECM!
PCM:
1. Turn the ig nition switch OFF .
2.
Disconne c t ECM / PCM con -
nector C (31P).
3. Turn the ignition switch ON
(II).

Block the right fro nt wheel
and slowly rotate the left front
wheel.
5.
Measure voltage between ECMI
PCM connector terminals 820
and C23.

Does the voltage pulse between

V and 5 V or battery voltage?

NO

Repair short in the wire
betw . . n the ECM/PCM IC23)

Repair open in the wire
betw .. n the ECM/PCM 1C23)
and the VSS.
- If wire i. OK. test the VSS
(see section 23).

NOTE l4WD): Do not use the engine to turn
the front wheels with the rear wheels on the
ground. The 4WD system will engage and
the vehicle will suddenly lurch forward.
Substitute a known ~ good ECMI

PCM and recheck. " symptom!

Substitute II known-good ECM!
YES
PCM and recheck. If symptom!
indication gon away. replace
the original ECM/PCM.
