Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor

The
scan
tool indicates Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)
POllS:
A range/performance problem in
the
Engine
Coolant Temperature
IECT)
Sen sor
circuit.
Th
e
ECT Sensor
is
a temperature dependant resistor
(thermistor). The
resistance of the thermistor decreases
as
the engine
coolant
temperature
increases as shown
below.

NOTE: If DTC pal 17 and/or POllS are
stored
at the
same
time as DTC P011S, troubleshoot those DTCs first, then trou-
bleshoot DTC
P0116.

• Eel
sensor
deterioration
Malfunction in the
thermostat
and
cooling
system
Troubleshooting Flowchart

The MIL has been reported on.

OTe P0116
is
stored.
I
Problem
vermcation:
1.
Start
the
engine
.
Hold the
engine at
3,000
rpm
with
no
loa
d (in Park
or
neutral) until
the radiator fan comes
on,
then let
it
id
le.
2.
With
the
scan
tool.
check the
ECT.

Is
176
~
200°F
(SO -
93°C) or
YES
Intermittent
failure,
system
is
OK
0.

0.7
V
ind icated?
at this time. Check the
thermo-
stat and the cooling system.

NO
Check the thermostat and
the
cooling system
.
If they are OK,
repllce the
Eel
sensor.
