COOLING SYSTEM
THERMOSTAT
REMOVAL

Remove the fuel tank (page 2-4).
Drain the coolant from the system (page 6-5).
Loosen the hose band screw and disconnect the
upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing
cover.
Remove the two bolts, ground terminal and thermo-
stat housing cover.
Remove the thermostat from the housing.
INSPECTION
• Wear insulated gloves and adequate eye protec-
tion.
• Keep flammable materials away from the elec-
tric heating element.
Visually inspect the thermostat for damage.
Replace the thermostat if the valve stays open at
room temperature.
Heat the water with an electric heating element to
operating temperature for 5 minutes.
Suspend the thermostat in heated water to check
its operation.
NOTE:
Do not let the thermometer or thermostat touch the
pan, or you will get false readings.
THERMOSTAT BEGINS TO OPEN:
163-171 of (73-77 °C)
VALVE LIFT:
8 mm (0.3 in) minimum at 194
of
(90°C)
Replace the thermostat if the valve responds at
tem-
perature other than those specified.
