served by the computer running the browser service. The browser
on a given network segment provides a browse list to the client
computers located in the same segment. Although it is unlikely
for a controller to become the host of the browse list, even when
the feature is turned on, it is recommended that the service not be
used. An additional benefit of turning it off is reduced network
traffic.
Server Service
This is a component of the Operating System and it is turned on
by default. The following are the effects on the system operation
when this service is disabled:
Shutting down the Server Service will shut down the Browser
Service as well.
The controller cannot be seen as a device when browsing the
network.
The controller's shared scan folder (e.g. ipc1_SHARE) will not be
accessible.
Network Scan using the shared folder will fail.
Printer drivers using printer ports such as \\Device Name\DSSC,
\\Device Name\ipc1_PCL6 and \\Device Name\ipc1_PS will not
be able to print (SMB printing). Novell, TCP/IP and IPP printing
are not affected.
Printer Driver download (Point-And-Print) from the Controller
will not work because the shared printer folder will not be
accessible.
The Microsoft Printing setting on the Startup Page and in Printer
Utility will remain "Enabled" but in fact it will be disabled.
No effect on Document Monitor.
Internet Server
The following are the effects on the system operation when this
service is disabled:
Printer Utility and Document Manager will not be available.
IPP printing will not be available.
Controller can send and receive email normally.
The Internet Server in the Controller cannot be used to setup an
illegal or malicious web site or spread web based viruses.
