INTRODUCTION

134
This section covers both the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features of the
ipc1-im8130 controller. Wi-Fi refers to 802.11b wireless
communications standard. The Bluetooth wireless technology
allows connectivity and printing without requiring network user
authentication.

Bluetooth

The Bluetooth option will install and operate in conjunction with
the Wi-Fi or embedded network cards without any interference.
In order to utilize the Bluetooth option, the following hardware
are needed:
On the controller side, 3com Wireless Bluetooth USB Adapter,
model 3CREB96. This device provides reliable performance with
connection speeds up to 1 Mbps and distances of 10 meters
(approximately 33 feet). It also offers built-in security such as
authentication and 128-bit encryption.
On the client side, a Bluetooth PC card such as the Imagistics
Bluetooth PC Card, model PA3053U that includes software
support for the Hardcopy Cable Replacement Profile (HCRP)
standard.

Wi-Fi

There are two types of Wi-Fi networks: Infrastructure and Ad
Hoc.
In the Infrastructure type, a number of base stations, called access
points (AP), are connected to a wired Ethernet network. These
APs can transmit and receive over a radius of up to 100 meters.
Users with Wi-Fi client devices such as notebooks access the
network through the nearest AP, and can move around the site
without dropping the connection.
In the Ad Hoc type, two or more devices form a small temporary
network, communicating directly with each other.
The IEEE 802.11b standard for Wi-Fi communications specifies a
security method called Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) which
restricts unauthorized access to the Wi-Fi network.
The Cisco Wi-Fi card supports widely-used network protocols
such as TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and AppleTalk.
