General Operation Problems

Problem
The battery does not charge.
The engine shuts off during operation.
Field Pro® 6040

Possible Cause
The battery cables are loose or
corroded.
The ground connection is loose or
corroded.
The battery is discharged or damaged.
A fuse is damaged.
A relay is damaged.
The voltage regulator/rectifier is
damaged.
The charging circuit wiring is corroded,
loose, or damaged.
The fuel tank is empty.
The fuel filter is plugged.
The fuel pump has failed.
The fuel/carburetor solenoid or its
circuit wiring has failed.
A component in the engine run circuit
(fuses, key switch, main power relay)
has failed.
The engine run circuit wiring is
corroded, loose, or damaged.
The engine is malfunctioning.

Corrective Action
Clean and secure the battery cables.
Clean and secure the ground
connections at the engine block.
Charge and test the battery.
Replace the battery if necessary.
Test the fuse F4 (20A) and replace it if
necessary; refer to Fuses in Chapter 5
– Electrical System.
Test the charge relay and replace if
necessary; refer to Component Testing
in Chapter 5 – Electrical System.
Test the voltage regulator/rectifier
and replace it if necessary; refer
to the Kohler Command CH740
Service Manual for regulator/rectifier
information
Clean, secure or repair/replace the
circuit wiring; Refer to the Electrical
Schematics in Appendix A.
Fill the fuel tank.
Replace the fuel filter.
Test the pulse fuel pump and
repair/replace it if necessary; refer to
the Kohler Command CH740 Service
Manual for pulse fuel pump information.
Test the carburetor solenoid and
replace it if necessary; refer to the
Kohler Command CH740 Service
Manual for fuel shut-off solenoid
information.
Clean, secure or repair/replace the
circuit wiring; Refer to the Electrical
Schematics in Appendix A.
Test the engine run circuit components
and replace it if necessary; refer to
Fuses in Chapter 5 – Electrical System.
Clean, secure or repair/replace the
circuit wiring; Refer to the Electrical
Schematics in Appendix A.
Troubleshoot the engine; refer to the
Kohler Command CH740 Service
Manual.
