Disassembling the Cylinder (continued)
Assembling the Cylinder
Hydraulic System: Service and Repairs
Prevent damage when clamping the cylinder in a vise; clamp on
the clevis only.
2. Mount the cylinder securely in a vise by clamping on the clevis end of the
barrel. Use of a vise with soft jaws is recommended.
3. Use a spanner wrench to rotate the internal collar counterclockwise until it
is free of the cylinder barrel.
4. Remove the plugs from ports. Extract rod, head and piston assembly from
barrel by carefully twisting and pulling on the shaft.
Do not clamp vise jaws against the shaft surface. Clamp on the
clevis ONLY.
5. Mount the shaft securely in a vise by clamping on the clevis of the rod.
Remove lock nut from the rod. Slide piston and head off the shaft.
6. Remove the wear rings, seals, back−up ring and O−rings from the piston
and head.
Refer to
Figure 62
for this procedure.
1. Make sure all the cylinder components are clean before assembly.
Note: Clean any debris or corrosion from the end of the barrel.
2. Coat the new wear rings, O−rings, seals and back−up ring with clean
hydraulic fluid.
A. Install the backup rings and seal to outside of piston.
B. Install the O-ring to the inner bore of piston.
C. Install the O-ring, backup ring and rod seals to the cylinder head.
Do not clamp vise jaws against the shaft surface. Clamp on the
clevis ONLY.
3. Mount the shaft securely in a vise by clamping on the clevis of the shaft.
A. Coat the shaft with a light coat of clean hydraulic fluid.
B. Carefully slide the head assembly and then the piston assembly onto the
shaft. Install the lock nut onto the shaft and tighten to 54 N·m (40 ft−lb).
C. Remove the shaft assembly from the vise.
4. Coat all the internal parts with a light coat of clean hydraulic fluid. Slide the
piston/shaft/head assembly into the barrel being careful to not damage the
