Starting the engine
Before starting the engine, make sure
that the selector lever is in position P.

The engine can also be started if the selec-
tor lever is in shift position N.
Apply the handbrake.
To start: turn the key to position 2 in
the ignition lock ( page 55).
The preglow indicator lamp q in the
instrument cluster comes on.
As soon as the preglow indicator lamp
q has gone out, turn the key to po-
sition 3 and then let go of it.
The engine starts automatically. If after
a given time the engine has not started,
the starting procedure is terminated
automatically. You can terminate the
starting procedure manually at any
time.
To interrupt the starting procedure:
Turn the key to position 0 in the igni-
tion lock.

You can start the engine without preglow if
the engine is warm.
Pulling away

Only select reverse gear when the vehicle is
stationary. Otherwise, you could damage the au-
tomatic transmission.
Only drive at high engine speeds once the engine
has warmed up. This protects the engine.

You can only move the selector lever to the
required position when you depress the brake
pedal. Only then is the selector lever lock can-
celled.
Depress the brake pedal and keep it
depressed.
The selector lever lock will be released.
Release the handbrake.
The ! handbrake indicator lamp in
the instrument cluster goes out.

Driving and parking
Move the selector lever to D or R.

Wait for the shift process to complete be-
fore pulling away.
Release the brake pedal.
Accelerate carefully.

After a cold start, the automatic transmis-
sion will shift at a higher engine speed. This helps
the catalytic converter to reach its operating
temperature more quickly.
