Driving tips
In Germany, the permissible maximum
speed for a vehicle/trailer combination is
80 km/h.

Keep to a maximum speed of 80 km/h,
even in countries where higher speeds for
vehicle/trailer combinations are allowed.
Your vehicle will have different handling
characteristics when it is towing a trailer,
compared to when it is driven without a
trailer.
The vehicle/trailer combination:
is heavier
has limited acceleration and gradient-
climbing abilities
has a longer braking distance
reacts more to gusty side winds
requires fine steering adjustments
consumes more diesel
Select shift range 1, 2 or 3 early, be-
fore steep uphill or downhill gradients
If necessary, shift the transfer case to
LOW ( page 84).
In this way you will make use of the en-
gine's braking effect and will not need
to use the brake so much to maintain
speed. This will reduce the load on the
brake system and prevent the brakes
from overheating and wearing too
quickly. If you do need to apply the
brakes, do not depress the brake pedal
continuously, but rather periodically.

Risk of accident
During the journey do not apply the brakes
continuously, e.g. avoid brake rubbing due
to constant light pressure on the pedal. This
will cause the brake system to overheat,
lead to longer braking distances and could
even result in the complete loss of braking
effect.

Driving tips
Maintain greater distances than when
travelling without a trailer.
Avoid braking suddenly. Apply the
brakes lightly at first to allow the trailer
to run on and then quickly increase the
braking force.
The gradient-climbing abilities from a
standstill are correct for sea level.
When driving in mountainous terrain,
note that the power output of the en-
gine, and with it its gradient-climbing
ability from a standstill, decrease with
increasing altitude.
If the trailer begins to swing:
Do not accelerate
Do not attempt corrective steering
Brake if necessary

draw out the vehicle/trailer combination by
accelerating.
