Driving on sand
Observe the following rules when driving
on sand:
Shift the transfer case to LOW
( page 82).
Avoid high engine speeds.
Select the automatic transmission shift
range that is appropriate for the off-
road conditions ( page 82).
Drive quickly to overcome rolling re-
sistance. The vehicle could otherwise
dig itself into the sand.
Drive in the tracks of other vehicles, if
possible. Make sure that the ruts are
not too deep, that the sand is firm
enough and that your vehicle has suffi-
cient ground clearance.
Ruts
Observe the following rules when driving
along ruts in off-road terrain or on roads
with loose gravel:
Shift the transfer case to LOW
( page 82).
!
Check that the ruts are not too deep and
that your vehicle has sufficient clearance. Other-
wise, your vehicle could be damaged or bottom
out and get stuck.
Avoid high engine speeds.
Shift the automatic transmission to
shift range 1.
Drive slowly.
Where ruts are too deep, drive with the
wheels on one side on the middle sec-
tion of turf if possible.

Risk of accident
Damage to the vehicle creates the risk of an
accident for yourself and other road users. If
in doubt, have your vehicle checked at a
qualified specialist workshop which has the
necessary specialist knowledge and tools to
carry out the work required. Mercedes-Benz
recommends that you use a Mercedes-Benz
Service Centre for this purpose.
Travelling over rough terrain places greater
demands on your vehicle than driving on
normal roads.
After travelling off-road check the vehicle.
In that way, you can detect damage
promptly and reduce the risk of an acci-
dent to yourself and other road users.
