Verifying SCM Communications Over an IP LAN

This procedure details the test steps which must be performed on the System Controller
Module (SCM) when the 10Base-T port is connected to a local area network to ensure that the
SCM is communicating properly over the network.

Prerequisite Procedures

Complete the following procedure prior to verifying SCM communications over an IP LAN. If
necessary, refer to the appropriate documentation. The prerequisite procedure is as follows:

Tools and Materials Required

Access to a PC or other computer connected to the local area network

Procedure

1. Determine the SCM IP Address.
If the IP Address for the SCM is not available, either obtain it from the network
administrator or manually check for the address in the
Management Interface.
NOTE
System Administrator logon privileges are required to modify the IP
parameters on the SCM.
2. Ping the SCM from a remote computer on the network.
Using a remote computer system connected to the local area network, perform an ICMP
Ping on the IP Address of the SCM. Verify that the SCM responds properly.
If the SCM fails to respond, try the following:
• Verify the proper
• Verify the SCM is properly cabled into the local area network and that the 10Base-T
cable is properly seated in the RJ-45 connector on the rear of the chassis.
If the OPTI-6100 System is connected to a hub or other network device that provides a
carrier sense light for each port, verify that the carrier sense light for the port to which the
OPTI-6100 is connected is lit. If this light is not lit, check the cabling between the hub and
the chassis. If none of these steps are successful, contact the administrator of the local area
network for assistance.
