8.4.6 Authentication Overview

Authentication is the process of determining who a user is and validating access to the device. The
device can authenticate users who try to log in based on user accounts configured on the device
itself. The device can also use an external authentication server to authenticate a large number of
users.
The device supports RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service, see
page
225) and TACACS+ (Terminal Access Controller Access-Control System Plus, see
8.4.6.2 on page

8.4.6.1 Local User Accounts
By storing user profiles locally on the device, your device is able to authenticate and authorize
users without interacting with a network authentication server.
8.4.6.2 RADIUS and TACACS+
RADIUS and TACACS+ are security protocols used to authenticate users by means of an external
server instead of (or in addition to) an internal device user database that is limited to the memory
capacity of the device. In essence, RADIUS and TACACS+ authentication both allow you to validate
an unlimited number of users from a central location.
