2 Service operation
If no default gatekeeper has been defined, the IP telephone will always perform a multi-
cast scan. In this case the alternative gatekeeper entries have no significance. The first
gatekeeper found temporarily becomes the default gatekeeper. If the gatekeeper supplies
alternative gatekeeper information, this alternative gatekeeper temporarily becomes the
alternative gatekeeper (none of the gatekeeper entries in the telephone will be changed). If
the gatekeeper fails, the IP telephone will go into a loop for 30 seconds looking alternately
for a temporary default gatekeeper and if applicable for a temporary alternative gatekeeper.
If the search is aborted and then restarted, the IP telephone will delete the old temporary
entries and carry out a multicast search again.

Alternative gatekeeper

In addition to the methods described above for the default gatekeeper, alternative gatekeep-
ers can also be configured in this way:

via the default gatekeeper that also supplies this information (only) about Alt GK1.
Note:
•
If an alternative gatekeeper has not been defined, then only the default gatekeeper
will be looked for in each case.
•
Should the default gatekeeper fail, then the search will be for the default gatekeeper,
Alt GK1 and Alt GK2 in turn and for 120 seconds each. Should the default gatekeeper
or one of the alternative gatekeepers fail, the first search for the default gatekeeper
will only last 30 seconds).
