Center Components

NOTE: This procedure cannot be done with the
engine in the frame. Complete Removing proce-
dures for Top-Side, Left-Side, and Right-Side must
precede this procedure.
NOTE: For efficiency, it is preferable to remove
and disassemble only those components which
need to be addressed and to service only those
components. The technician should use discretion
and sound judgment.
ENGINE BLOCK ASSEMBLY
Removing
1. Remove the engine/transmission assembly (see
Removing Engine/Transmission in this section).
2. Separate the transmission and V-belt housing from
the engine (see Right-Side Components in this
section).
3. Remove the timing belt (see Left-Side Compo-
nents in this section).
4. Remove the cylinder head assembly (see Left-Side
Components in this section).
5. Remove the oil pump assembly (see Left-Side
Components in this section).
6. Remove the cap screws securing the oil pan
assembly; then remove the oil pan assembly.
Account for two O-rings and a gasket.
7. Remove the four cap screws securing the water
pump to the engine block; then remove the pump
assembly.

8. Measure piston protrusion using the following
procedure.
A. Rotate the crankshaft until one of the pistons is
at top-dead-center (TDC) as indicated by a dial
indicator.
B. Using a depth micrometer, measure and record
piston protrusion above the cylinder deck plane.
C. Using the same procedure, measure and record
the second piston protrusion.
D. Mark the piston with the highest protrusion and
record that value for use later in this section.
