The following illustration clarifies characteristic curve compensation by means of an ex-
ample.
In the top part of the illustration, the characteristic curve is shown for a valve with positive
overlap. The overlap functions as a dead zone, which is undesirable in a linear system.
The bottom part of the illustration shows how a series circuit compensates for this nonlin-
earity.
