Starter Motor Turns Slowly, Engine May or May Not Start
Inspect battery:
(page 18.7)
Battery condition good
Perform starter current draw
(page 18.18)
Lower than normal cranking speed
and high amp draw
Perform positive side voltage
drop. (page 18.13)
Voltage drop within allowable
Perform negative side voltage
drop. (page 18.16)
Volt drop within allowable
Internal starter problem:
bearings, bushings, shorted
windings, poor brush contact,
etc. Remove starter & inspect
No internal starter problems found
Engine compression excessive
or internal engine problems
not allowing parts to rotate freely
NOTE: Diagnostics require a Digital Multi Meter with a high current shunt or an inductive ammeter clamp.

Starter motor turns, but engine
does not turn. The starter motor can
be heard spinning.
