screwdriver, âllowing nuid to drain.
6. Remove remaining screws and remove oil pan and
gasket. Discard gasket.
7. Drain fluid from oil pan. Clean pan with solvent and
dry thoroughly with clean compressed air.
8. Remove two (2) strainer-to-valve body screws,
strainer and gasket. Discard gasket. (Remove and discârd
filter and gask€t on JA and JH nodels).
9. Thoroughly clean strainer asseûbly jn solvent ând
dry rhroughly with clean compressed air.
10. Install ne\r strainer-to-valv€ body gasket, strainer
(or filter) and two (2) screws.
11. Install new gâsket on oil pan and install oil pan.
Tighten its thifie€n (13) attaching bolt and washer
assemblies to 12 pound-feet torque.
I 2. Lower vehicle. Add approximâtely 3 litres (6 pints)
of DEXRONO or DEXRON@II automatic transmrssron
flùid or its equivalent through filler tube.
11. With s€lector lever in PARK position, apply hand
brake, start engine and let idle (carbur€tor offfast idle step).
DO NOT RACE ENGINE.
14. Move selector lever through each range ând, with
selector lever in PARK range, check the fluid ievel.
15. Add additional fluid to bring level to 1,/4" below
the ADD mark oû the dipstick.
CAUTION: Do not overfill. Foaming could
r€sult if ovErfull.
Adding Fluid to Fill Dry Transmission and
Conv€r1€r Assombly
In cases oftransmission overhaul when a complete fill
is required, inclùding conve er (approximately 20 pints),
proceed as followsl
1. Add a sufÊcient quântity of transmission fluid
through filler tube to râise the fluid level to the lower
portion of the dipstick.
2. With manual contml lever in park (P) posiiion, start
engine and place on cold idle cam DO NOT RACE
ENGINE. Move manual control lever through each mnge.
3. Immediâtely check nuid level with sel€ctor level in
pârk (P), engine running and vehicle on LËVEL surfâce and
add âdditioml fluid to bring level to 1,/4" below the
'ADD'
mark on the dipstick, Do not overlill.
C H E C K I N G T R A N S M I S S I O N M O U N T
Raise vehicle on â hoist. Pùsh up and pull down on the
transmission extension while observing the transmissioû
mount. If.the rubber separates from the metal plate ofthe
mount or if the extension moves up but not down (mount
bottomed out) replace the mount. If there is relâtive
movement between metal plate of mount and its attâching
point, tighten screws or nuts attachtng mount ât
transmission or crossmember.

1 . The shift tube and lever assembly must be free in the
masrjacket. Se€ Section 38 for alignment ofst€edng column
assembly if necessary.
2. To check for proper shift linkage adjustment, Iift the

transmission selector lever towards the steering wheel.
Allow the selector lever to be positioned in drive (D) by the
transmissio[ detent.
NOTICE: Do not use the indicâtor pointer âs â
refercrce to position the selecior lever' when
performing linkage adjustment, pointer is adjust€d last.
L Releâse the selector lever. îhe lever should be
inhibited fron engâging low range unless the levd is lifted.
4. Lift the s€lector lever towârds the steering *heel, and
allow the lever to be positioned in neutral (N) by the
trânsmission detent.
5. Release the selector lever. The lever should now be
inhibit€d from engaging reverse range ùnless the lever is
lifted.
6. A properly adjusted linkage will prevent the selector
lever from moving beyond both the neutral detent, and the
