R€moval
L R€move wheel(s) and brâke drurn(s).
2. Remov€ nuts holding retainer to bâcking plate. Pùll
retâiner clear of bolts and reinstall two lower nuts finger
tight to hold backing plâte in position.
3. Pull out axle shâft as shown in Fig. 48-15.
when removing a rear axie shaft in th€ typ€ "B' with
8-1,/2" ring gear you may find the beâring will come out in
pi€ces as you remove the axle shâft from the housing. The
inner race with bearing ând on€ retainer plate will com€ out
with the âxle shaft. The outer race and inside retâiner plate
will remâin in the âxle housing. (Fig. 4B'16) Even though
the bearing is not in one piece it is no indication the beâring
has failed.

NOTICE: Axle shâfls âre not interchâng€âble between
sides.
L Apply a thin coât of wheel beâring greâse in the
bearing recesses of the housing. Insert axle shafi âssembly
car€fully until shâfr splines engâge in side gear.
2. Remove nuts holdjng backing plate. Push axl€ shâft
into position.
3. Place retainer over studs ând install nuts. Torque to
15 ft. lbs.
4. Instâll drum(s) and wheelG).
EXCEPT "8" TYPE AXLE

1. Slid€ axle shaft into place. Exercise care thât splin€s
on end ofshaft do not dâmag€ oil seal and that they engag€
with splines of rea. axie side gear.
2.Instâll axle shaft "C" iock on bulton end of âxle shaft
and push shaft outward so that shâfl lock seats in
counterbore of reâI axle side gear.
3. Position rear âxle pinion shaft lhrough câse and
pinions, aligning hole in shafi with lock screw hole. Instâll
lock scr€w and torque to 20 ft. lbs.
4. Using a new gasket, install cârrier cover and torque
bolll ro 20 fr. lbs. Make sure both garket \urlaces on cârrier
and cover are clean before installing new gasket. Torque
carrier cover bolts in a crosswise pattem to ensur€ uniform
clraw on cover gaskei.
5. Fill axle with lubricânt to a level within 3/8" offiller
hose. See Specifications for proper lubricanl.
6. Install brake drum âûd wheel.
7. Lower car ând test operâtion of axle.
