3, To assemble camshaft gear thrust plate and gear
spacer riûg to camshaft firmly support camshaft ât back of
ftont jo rnal in an ârbor press.
4. Place gear spacer ring and thrust plate over end of
shaft, and instail woodrull key in shaft keywây. Instâll
camshaft gear and press it onto the shaft until it bottoms
agâinst the geâr spâcer ring. Th€ €nd clearance of the thrust
plâte should be.001" to .005".
Installâtion
1. Instâll the câmshaft and gear assembly in the engine
block, being carcful not to damage camshaft bearings or
camshaft.
2. Turn crankshaft and camshaft so that the valve
timing marks on th€ g€â. teeth will line ùp. Push camshaft
into position. Install câmshaft thrust plâte-to-block bolts
and torque to 80 lb. in. (9N.n).
3. Ch€ck câmshafr and crankshaft gear run out with
â dial indicator. The camshaft gear run out should not
exc€ed .004" and the crankshâft g€â. run out should not
exceed.003".
4. If gear run out is excessive, the geâr will have to be
removed and any bùrrs cl€aned from the shaft or the gear
will hâv€ to be r€placed.
5. Check the backlash between th€ timing gear teeth
with a diâl indicator. The backlash should be not less thân
.0O4" nor more than .006' for nerv parts and not more than
.008' for worn parts.
6. Iûstall fuel pump.
7. Install crankcase front cover.
8. Install lifters.
9. Install engine in vehicle.
CAMSHAFl BÉARINGS
Removal
1. Remove câmshaft as previously outlined.
2. Remove oil pan and oil pump as described elsewhere
in this section.
3. Dive camshaft rear plug from cylinder block.
NOTICE: This procedure is bâsed on removal of the
bearings neârest center of ihe engine first. witÏ this
method a minimum amoùnt of lufis are necessâry to
remove all bearings.
4. Itsing Tool Set J-6098, with nut and thrust washer
installed to etrd of threads, index pilot in camshaft front
beâring and instâIl puller screw through pilot.
5. Install remover ard installer tool with shoulder
loward bearing, making sure a sufficient amount of threads
are engaged.
6. Usingtwo wrenches, hold puller screw while turning
nùt. When bearing has been pulled from bore, r€move
remover and instâller tool and beâring fiom puller screw
(fig.6Àl-19).
7. Remove remâi trg beannes (exc€pt front and reâr)
in the same mânner. It will be necessary to index pilot in

Removal
1. Remove engine, following prccedure on pâge 6Al-37
2. Remove lifters âs previously outlined.
3. Remove crânkcase front cover as previously
outlined.
4. Remove fuel pump.
5. Àlign timirg gear mârks then remove the two
camshaft thrust plate bolts by working lhrcugh hol€s in
camshaft geâr.
6. Remove ihe camshaft and gear assembly by pulling
it out throueh th€ front of the block.
NOTICE: Suppon camshafr cârefully wTen removing
so as not to damage th€ camshaft bearings.
Inspection
The camshaft bearing journals should be measured
with a micrometer for an out-of-rcund condition. If the
journals exceed .001" out-of-round, the câmshâft should be
replaced.
Inspect the camshaft g€âr ând thrust plâte for wear or
damage. Meâsure the camshaft end play. This should be
.0O1" to .005".
Geâr Replacement
l. If the inspection indicated that the camshaft, gear
or thrust plate should be replâced, thegearmust be removed
from the camshaft. This operation æquires the use of
camshaft geâI remover J-971.
2. Place the camshâfi through the geâ. remover, place
end of r€mover on table of â press ând prcss shaft out of
