4. Remove pinion ilânge nut and washer. (Fig. 48-23).
5. Rernove pinion ilange. (Fie.48.24)
6. Remove oil s€al by driving it out of carrier wirh a
blunr chisel. {Fig.4B-25) Do nor damage carrier.
7. Examine seâl surface ofpinion flange for tool marks,
nicks, or damâge, such âs â groove worn by the seal. If
dâmâged, replace flânge âs outlined und€r PINION
FLANGE REPLÀCEMENT.
8. Examine carrier bore ând remov€ any burrs rhat
might cause leaks around the O.D. of the seâI.
9. Install new s€âl âs shown in Fig. 4B-26.
10. Apply Special Seal Lubricant, No. 1050169 or
equjvalent, to the O.D. of the pinion flange and seating lip
11. Insrall pinion flange and lighlen nut to the sâme
posrtion âs ûarked in Step 3. While holding pinion flange
as shown in Fig. 48-23, tighten nut 1,/16" b€yond âlignment

L Raise car and remove both rear wheels and drums.
2. Mark drive shaft and pinion flânge, then disconnecr
rear joint ând support drive shaft out of the wây. Ifjoint
beârings âre not retained by a retâiner strap, use a piece of
wire to hold bearings on their journals.
3. Check preload with an inch pound torque wrench
ând reco.d. This will give conbined pinion beafing, carfier
b€aring. axle bearing ând seal preload. (Fig. 48-21)
4. Remove pinion flange nut and washer. (Fig. 4B-23)
5. Remove pinion flanse. (Fis. 48-24)
Hâve â suiiâble container available as some fluid will
drain from rear axle âs flânge is removed.
6. Apply Special Seal Lubricanr, No. i050169 or
equivalent, to the O.D. ofthe new pinion flange then install
pinion t'lange, washe. and pinion flâng€ nut finger tight.
7. While holding pinion nange as shown in Fig. 4B-23,
tighten the nut a litdeât a rime and turn driv€ pinion several
revolutions âfter each tighlening to set the rollers. Check
