IIYDBAULIC VALVE LIFTERS
Hydraulic Vâlve Lifters âre used to keep all parts of
the valve train in constant contact for quiet operâtion-
The hydraulic lifter âssembly consists ol the lifter
body, which rides in the cylinder block boss, a plunger, a
push rod seai, a metering valve, a plunger spring, a check
ball and spring. â check ball retaine. and a push rod seat
when th€ lifter is riding on the low point (base circle)
of the cam, th€ plunger spring keeps the plunger and pùsh
rod seât in contact with the push rod.
wh€n the lilter body begins to ride up the cam iobe,
th€ ch€ck ball lraps the oil in th€ reservoir below the
plunger. The plunger and lifter body then rise as a unit,
pushingup the push rod and opening the valve. A very small
amoùnt of oil will leak out b€tween the plunger and the
body.
As the lifter body rides down the other side of the cam,
the plunger follows with it untii lhe vâlve closes. The lifter
body continues to follow the cam to its low point, but the
plunger spring keeps the plunger in contact with the pùsh
rod. The bâll check vâlve will then move off its seat ând the
lifter reservoir will be refilled with oil
INTAKE MANIFOLD
The irtake mânifold is of cast iron, single level desigt
for efficjent fuel distribution. The carburcror pad is centrally
located with an Early Fuel Evapomtion (E.F.E) passage
running underneath ihe pad, through whi€h exhausl gases
are forced, to prcmote fâster fuel vâporizâtion when the
engine is côld. An Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) port
is also cast into the manifold for th€ induotion ofa metered
amount ofexhaust gâses into the âiIand fu€l mixture which
has entered through the carburetor.
EXHAUST MANIFOLD
A single four port, underslung, center take down
manifold of cast iron is used to direct exhaust gases from
the combustion chambers. A heat shield is mounied to the
manifold thât is used to route heated air to the âir cleaner
for bette. fuel vaporization.
E n g i n e L u b r i c a t i o n
Full pressure lubrication, thrcugh a full flow oil filter is furnish€d
by â gear-type oil pump. The distributor, driven by a helicâl gear oû the
camshafi, drives theoil pump. Oil drawn through the pick up screen ând
pipe is pressùrized in lhe pùmp and rout€d to the oil filter. If excessive
back pressure is encountered ât the filter, a bypâss r€lief valve âllows
oil flow to the main oil gâllery, locat€d along the right side ofthe block
This rifle drilled gallery supplies oil to the camshaft bearings, the
hldraulic lifler\ and the crankshâft main bearings
The connecting rod beâdngs are supplied oil from tle crankshaft
main beârings by means of doss drilled pâssages.
The vaive train is suppli€d its lubrication ftom the valve lifte^ Oil
w;thin the lifters is pump€d up through the top of the liften through
the holiow push rods to the rocker arms. From the hۉd, oil is drained
back to the cûnkcase through oil dmin back holes and the push rod
holes. (Fig. 6A1-1).
