All of the tests list€d below in conjunction with the
diagnostic connector cân be performed usirg a voltmeter
ând â test light. When a problem has been tracecl to a
specific area (such as faulty starter, HEI unit, defective
ignition switch, fâulty generator, underchârged bâttery etc.)
further reference to th€ Diagnostic portion of this section
may be required.
Some sensing points for the diâgnostic connector are
a1 splices rather than at the termiml ends of the wire.
B€câuse of the high reliâbility of these wires, this procedure
assumes thât a voltage at the connector meâns thât voltâge
is also at the end of the wire. If there is âny doubt, the
voltage ât the end of the wire can be. ch€ck€d with a

Connections at a unit should always be check€d.
Cranking Problsms
Crânking tests are made with th€ etgine at room or
operating temperâtur€. If the engine is extremely cold or
hot, voltâge readings will be lower thân nomal. This
procedure assumes the engine does not have a defect which
would result in poor cranking.
Tum the key to ''Staft" to determine which of the
following symptoms âpply.
1. Poor cranking, or solenoid clicks or chatters.
2. Solenoid makes no sound - no cranking.
