installation of an oil filter. The spring loaded oil pressure
relief valve limits the oil pressùre. The oil filter by"pâss valve
opens when the filter hâs become clogged, to the extent that
approximately 10-15 p.s.i. (69-108 kPa) pressure differerce
exists between rhe filter inlet and discharge, to by-pâss the
oil filter and channel unfiltered oil directly to the main oil
galleries of the engine.
A ful now oil filter is exrernally mounled to the oit
filter covernipple on the lower rightfront side ofrhe engine.
Normally, all engin€ oil passes through ihe filter €temen!,
howev€r, ifthe element becomes restricted, a spring loaded
by-pass valve opens as mentioned above (Fig. 647-4).
The main oil galleries run rhe full lengrh of the
crankcâse and cuts into the valve lifrer guide holes to supply
oil at full pressure to the lifters. Hoies drilled from-ihi
crankshaft bearings to the mâin gallery intersect the cam
bearing bores to supply oil to the cam bearings.
Holes drilled in the crankshâfr carry oil from rhe
crânkshaft beârings to rhe connecring rod bearings. pistons
and cylinder walls ârc lubricated by oil rhrown off the
crankshaft and connecting rod splash. Piston pins are
lubricated by splash.
A drilled hole in th€ camshaft connects the front
carnshaft beâring journal to rhe fronr of the camshaft. Oil
flows from the journal through â pâssâge to an outler
between lhe camshaft sprocket and distributor g€ar.
The oil streâm strikes the distributor geâr and provides
ample lubrication of ihe timing chain and sprockets by
splash (Fis. 647-5).
Eâch rocker arm and valve is supplied with oil through
the tubulâr push rod. This oil comes from the inside ofihe
lifter, pâssing around the metering valve and through â hole
in the lifter push rod seât. Oil from the push rod passes
through ahole in the rockerârm push rod seat, and emetges
on top of the push rod seât boss. See Fig. 6A7-6.
