b. Measure the "Piston Diameter" (at skirt across
c€nt€r line of piston pin).
c. Subtract pistotr diâmeter from cylinder bore
diameter to determine
''Pistor io Bore Clearance"
d, Locate piston to bore clearance on Piston Selection
Châri and determine if pistoû to bore clearance is in th€
âcceptâble range.
2. If used piston is not acceptâble, check Piston Size
Châft ând determine if a new piston can be selected to fit
cylinder bore within the âcceptable range.
3. Ifcylinder bore must be reconditioned, meâsùre new
pislon diameter (across center line ofpiston pin) then hore
cylindef bore to cofi€ct clearânce.
4. Mark th€ piston to idenlify the cylinder for which
it was fitted.

Romoval
i. Remove Hood.
2. Disconn€ct battery cables al batery.
3. Remove air cleaner.
4. Drâin radiâtor and block.
5. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses ând remove
radiâtor and fan shroud.
6. Disconnect wires ât:
. Starter Solenoid
. Temperaiure switch
. Oil Pressure Switch
. Coil
7. Disconnect:
. Àccelerator linkage ât inlet nânifold.
. Fu€i line, Èom tânk, ât fuel pumP
. Hoses at fuel vapor storage canister (if applicâble).
. Vâcuum line to power brake ùnit at nanifold, if so
8. Remove power steeing pump and lay aside, if so
equipped.
9. Raise vehicle on hoist.
10. Drâin crânkcas€.
11. Disconnect exhâusl pipe at mânifold and, if so
equipped, conv€rter bracket ât transmrsslon teâr mount.
12. Remove starter.
13. Remove nywheel splash shield or converiû housing
cover âs applicable.
14. On vehicles wilh automalic rrânsmicsions, remove
converler to flywheel attâching bolt.
15. Remove mount "through" bolts.
16. Remove bell housing bolts
17. Lôwer vehicle on hoist.
18. Râise transmission using floor jack.
lo. Allach engrne lrfting devices, raise engine.
20. Remove motor mount to €ngine brackets
21. Remov€ engine assembly.
lnstallation
L Position engine assembly in vheicle
2. Attach motor mount to engine brackets and lower
engine in place.
3. Remove engine lifting device.
4. Remove transmission floor jack.
5. Raise vehicle on hoist.
6. Iflstâtl mount "thrcugh" bolts. Torque to 65N'm
7. Install bell housing bolts Torque to 30 lb. ft
(41N'm).
8. On vehicles with automatic transmissions, install
conve er to llywheel âttaching bolts. Torque to 30 lb. ft.
(alN m).
9. lnstall flywh€el splâsh shield or convefter housing
cover âs applicable. Torque attaching bolts to 80 lb. in.
(eN'm).
10. Insiall starter.
11. Connect exhaust pipe at manifold and converte.

12. Lower vehicle on hoist.
13. Reinstall power steering pump, if so equipped
14. Connect:
. Accelerâtor tinkage âi inlet manifold.
. Fuel line, from ta[k, at fuel PumP.
a Hoses ât fuel vapor storage can$ter.
. Vacuum line to Power brake unit at manifold, if
eqùpped.
t5. Connect wires at:
. Starter Solenoid
. T€mperature Switch
. oil Pressure Switch
16. Install radiator and fan shroud and reconnect
radiator and heater hoses.
17. Fill cooling system.
18. Fill crânkcâse with oil See owner's mânual for
specifications.
19. Install aù cleaner.
20. Install hood.
21. Connect batterY câbles
NOTICE: To avoid possible arcing ofbâttery, connect
positive batler) cable first
22. Stad engine, check for leaks and check timing
CRANKSHAFT
R€moval
1. Remove engine âs previously outlin€d Remove
clurch, if applicâble. and flywheel and mounr engine on
2. Remove the oil dipstick and oil dipstick tùbe
3. Remove the spârk plugs.
4. Remove crankshaft pulley ând torsional damper.
5. Remove oil pân and oil pumP.
6. Remove crânkcase front cover'
7. Check the connecting rod caps for cylinder number
identification. If necessary, mârk them
8- Remove the connecting rod caps ând push the
pisrons ro the lop of bores.
9. Remove main beâring caps ând lift crankshâft out
of cylinder block.
lO. Remove rear mâin beadng oil seai and main
beâ.ings from cylindei block and mâin bearing caPs
