ELECTRIC CHOKE HEATER CHECKING
P R O C E D U R E
l. Allow choke to cool so thât when throttle is opened
slighily, choke blade fully closes.
NOTICE: This check musi be performed with engine
not running and at an ambient temperature of (60'C
to 27'Cr.
2. Stârt engine ând determine time for choke blade to
reach fuli open position. (Stâ tim€r rvhen engine starts).
3. If the choke biade fails to open fully within 3.5
minules. proceed wilh rrep' 4-5-6 belos.
4. Check voltage at the choke heater conneciion.'
(Engine must be mnning). If the voltage js approximately
12-15 volts, replace the electrical choke unit-
5. If the voltâg€ is low or zero, check ail wires and
connections. If âny connections in the oil pressure switch
circùitry are fâulty or if the oil pressure switch is failed open,
the oil waming light will be on with the engin€ runnrng.
Repair wires or connections as required
6. If all wiring and connections âte good, replace oil
pressure switch.
NOTIC8: No gasket is used between the choke cover
ând ahe choke housing because of grounding
requircments.

All 6 cylinder engines have a two'terrninal oil pressure
switch Gending unit) for controlling current to the el€ctric
choke heater. This switch and its âssociated circuitry
provide for the illumination of the "Oil" tell tale lamp in
the event ofloss of oil pressure or loss ofvoltâge at the choke
The diagrârn in Figur€ 6D-lA shows how the dùal
firnction is accomplish€d. The "Bulb Check" feâtureissame
as present system. That is, with ignition switch in "Run"
position ith engine off. This circuit will also indicate
continuity in th€ choke h€ater and its connector.
If'Oil'
lell tale lâmp illuminates with engine running,
it could indicate one or more of the following:
L Loss of oil pressure.
2. Loss of choke heâter voltâge.
3. Blown GÀUGE fuse.

All 1979 Cheviolet 'B' Series cârs are equipped with
an engine electrical diagnoslic connector, which is used to
sjmplify engine €lectrical system diâgnosis. Figure 6D-24
illùstrates the location of the engine electrical connector.
The connector provides access to severâl test points within
the stafting, charging, and ignition systems. Figure 6D-34
shows the engine electrical diâgnostic connector circuitry.
