To determine ifthe regulator is defective, an approved
regulator tester must be ùsed. After removing the three
attaching nuts, the stator, and diode trio screw (Fig. 6D-
l3C), the brush holder and regulator may be replaced by
removing thetworemaining screws. Notethe two insulators
located over the top of the brush clips in Figure 6D-13C,
ând that these two screws have special insulatiûg sleeves
over the screw body âbove the threads. The third mounting
screw may or may noi hâve an insulating sleeve. Ifnot, this
screw must not be interchanged ivith eilher one of the other
two screws, as a ground may result, causing no output or
unconkolled generalor ourpur. Reg{rlarors ma} !ar} in
âpp€ârance but are completely inaerchângeâble in these
generators,
Using voltage regulator tester CTW-1170 or equivalent
(Fig. 6D-l5C), ù is possibie to check the voltage regulator
both on the car and on the bench. It is also possible to use
this tester for a continuity tester, Use the instructions on
the tester cover for testing the regulato. on the bench and
use the following ins!ructions for the on car t€st and the
On-Caf T€st
This on-car tesl procedure helps to quickly determine
if a problem exists in th€ generâ.orlregulator circût. If you
do not obtair the proper results in this test, the generator
must be disrnantled and the regulator removed for further
testing.
1. Tum the tester OFF.
2. Mâke sure a regulator is not instâlled in the Tester
regulâtor holder.
L Plug the on-car testing accessory cabl€ into th€
accessory socket on the Tester ftont panel.
4. Disconnect the regulator connector from the
generator. Then plug the on-car testiûg accessory cable in

its place. Connect the ground lead (alligâtor clip) to the
generarcr case.
5. Test the generator/regulâtor circuit using st€ps 2, 3,
4 ând 15 of the instruction lâbel located on the inside of the
case cover. If you do not obtain the pfoper lamp ândlor
voltmeter indicarion, or if either or both lajnps flicker on
ând olï wherr you perform these steps, the regulâtor mùst
be removed from the generâtor for fu her testing to
determine whether the problem is in the generaior or in the
regulator.
Continuity Test
The continuity test accessory cabl€ is used in
conjunction with the meter otr the Tester. A high meter
leadirg indicates an open circuit (no continuity) while â
zero meter reading indicates continuity,
when you make â continuity test, keep the foilowing
points in mind:
1. Make su.e a regulator is not installed in the holder.
2. The knob is tumed clockwise only until it clicks.
3. All components must be isolated for testing.
4. Make sure voltage is not applied to the component
being tested.

If the slip dngs are difiy, they may be cleaned and
finished q/ith 4o0 grain or finer polishing cloth. Spin the
rotor, and hold the polishing cloth against the slip ings
ùntil they ârc cl€ân.
NOTICE: The rotor must be rotated in order to clean
the slip rings evenly. Cleaning the slip rings by haûd
without spinning the rotor may result in flat spots on
the slip rings, causing brush noise.
Slip rings which are rcugh or out of round should be
trued in a lathe to .002 inch maximum iûdicator reading.
Remove only enough material to mâke the rings smooth and
round. Finish wirh 400 grain or finer polishing cloth ând
biow away âil dust.
